A proxy is one product with about a dozen honest uses and a few dishonest ones. Sold as a single thing, it gets bought for wildly different jobs: a price monitor watching a competitor, a researcher pulling public listings, someone in one country trying to see the catalogue shown in another.

We run the network, so we see the shape of the demand rather than the marketing version of it. This is a map of what people genuinely use proxies for, what actually breaks in each case, and which type each job needs.

The pattern under all of it

Almost every use below reduces to one of three needs: see what a site shows somebody elsewhere, hold more than one identity on a site built for one, or read public data faster than a single IP is allowed to. The site changes. The underlying problem rarely does.

Retail and price monitoring

The largest category by a distance. Retailers show different prices, stock and catalogues by country, and many rate-limit aggressively because serving a price scraper costs them money and helps a competitor.

What breaks here is usually geography rather than detection. A price check from the wrong country returns the wrong currency and the wrong catalogue, so the data is quietly useless rather than obviously blocked. Rotating residential is the normal fit, because you need many light requests across many identities.

The site-specific guides cover Amazon, Walmart, eBay, Shopify, AliExpress, Temu, Shein, Zalando, ASOS, Myntra, Wildberries and MercadoLibre, plus the resale markets Vinted, Poshmark and Depop. The general method is in price monitoring.

Limited drops and collectibles

A separate problem from retail, because the constraint is time rather than volume. A drop sells out in seconds, the queue is adversarial, and the site is actively looking for automation.

This is the category where honesty matters most, because a lot of the marketing around it is dishonest. A proxy gives your entries a fair shot at looking like separate legitimate buyers. It does not defeat a queue system, and anything promising that is selling you something else. Travel, property and tickets

Travel pricing is the clearest example of geography changing an answer. The same flight, hotel or rental shows a different price depending on where the request appears to come from, which is why fare aggregation exists at all.

SEO and market data

Rank tracking is inherently a geography problem: a search result is different in every location, so checking it from one office IP tells you about one location. Tool-side, the platforms themselves rate-limit by IP.

Scraping tooling

Not a use case so much as the plumbing under most of them. The question here is where the proxy plugs in, and the answer differs per tool.

Configuration guides: Scrapy, Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium and Octoparse. For the anti-detect browsers that pair with proxies for multi-account work, Multilogin, GoLogin and AdsPower.

AI tools and training data

The newest category and the fastest growing. It splits cleanly in two: reaching an AI service from a supported region, and collecting data to train or evaluate models.

The first is mostly about geography and session stability, covered in ChatGPT, Claude AI, Gemini and Perplexity. The second is a volume problem, covered in AI training data, LLM scraping and AI agents, which is worth reading if you are building anything that browses autonomously.

Social platforms

The hardest category technically, and the one where terms of service matter most. These platforms are built to detect exactly this, they fingerprint the browser as much as the IP, and a proxy alone is rarely sufficient.

Streaming and gaming

Streaming is pure geography: the catalogue differs by country and the platforms detect datacenter ranges aggressively. Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Spotify, YouTube and Crunchyroll.

Gaming is different, and mostly a warning. Latency decides outcomes, and a proxy adds a hop, so routing gameplay through one usually makes you worse at the game. The legitimate uses are narrow: reaching a regional store, or a launcher that will not connect. League of Legends, Rocket League, Rainbow Six Siege, Warframe, Clash Royale, Steam, Fortnite and Roblox each say where that line is.

Jobs, local listings and crypto

Job boards and local marketplaces are regional by design, so the listings you see depend on where you appear to be: Indeed, Glassdoor, Craigslist, Yelp and Facebook Marketplace.

Crypto platforms restrict by jurisdiction, which makes this the category where the legal question is sharpest rather than the technical one. Binance, Coinbase and OpenSea each cover what a proxy does and does not change about that, and the honest answer in several cases is that it changes nothing you should rely on.

Choosing the type, not the brand

    Decide whether you need many identities or heavy traffic

    Many light identities is a per-GB job, so rotating residential. Heavy traffic through a few stable identities is a per-IP job, so ISP or datacenter. Getting this backwards is the most common way to overpay.

    Start on the cheapest tier the target tolerates

    Try datacenter first. Move to residential when block rates prove you have to, not because a guide said so. Paying for residential stealth on a site that never checks is waste.

What are proxies actually used for?
Overwhelmingly three things: seeing what a website shows somebody in another country, running more than one account or session on a site that expects one, and collecting public data at a volume that would otherwise get one IP rate-limited. Everything else on this page is a variation of those three, with a different site and a different failure mode.
Which proxy type do I need for my use case?
Match the meter to the work rather than the brand. Heavy traffic through a few fixed identities is a per-IP job, so ISP or datacenter. Light traffic across many identities is a per-GB job, so rotating residential. A defended consumer site usually needs residential; an open API or a lenient site rarely does. Is using a proxy on these sites allowed?
It depends entirely on what you do with it. Reading public pages through a different IP is ordinarily fine and is what search engines do all day. Creating multiple accounts, evading a ban, or breaching a site's terms is not, and no proxy makes it so. Every article linked here says where that line sits for its own site rather than pretending the question does not exist.
Why do sites block proxies at all?
Mostly to stop automated abuse: scalping, credential stuffing, scraping at a volume that costs them money to serve. The detection is rarely about the proxy itself, it is about the IP's reputation and how the traffic behaves. That is why a cheap datacenter IP fails on a defended site while a residential one often does not, and why behaviour matters as much as the address.
