One network, many names
UK brand choice hides very little network choice
More than 650 retail broadband brands sell UK home internet, which sounds like enormous diversity until you look one layer down. Most of them resell a single wholesale access network, Openreach, which reaches around 23 million premises. Openreach runs the physical line but does not hand out the customer's public IP: that comes from the retail provider's own network. So the address a site actually sees clusters by retail ISP, and the big four carry roughly four in five UK connections between them. Mobile is the same shape, only starker: the two largest UK mobile brands by customer count both ride Virgin Media O2's network, so a Tesco Mobile or Sky Mobile IP is physically a Virgin Media O2 IP.
For a proxy buyer that is the fact that matters. A UK pool can look varied by brand and still be concentrated across a handful of networks, which is precisely what a detection system keys on. It is why the measured breakdown above is worth more than a headline count: what you want to know is which networks the addresses actually sit on, not how many logos are involved.
Where UK IPs earn their keep
A commerce-heavy market with its own quirks
Britain shops online more than almost anyone. Online was 29.4% of all UK retail in mid-2026, one of the highest shares in the world, which is why so much UK-IP work is retail price and availability tracking across Amazon.co.uk, Argos, Tesco, ASOS and the rest. Search tracking sits alongside it: google.co.uk now redirects to google.com, so the country domain no longer selects UK results, and an IP that resolves to Britain is what pulls a genuinely UK-localised SERP.
Two UK specifics are worth knowing. British broadcasters gate their streams at playback rather than at the page, so QA teams verify from UK addresses that a geo-fence or a regional catalogue behaves the way it should. Why do so many UK ISPs share the same network?
Most UK retail broadband is sold over one wholesale access network, Openreach, so hundreds of brand names sit on relatively few underlying networks, and the public IP comes from the retail ISP rather than from Openreach. UK addresses therefore group by retail-ISP network, which is why the measured network breakdown matters more here than a raw count.
Can I target a specific UK city?
