Why people run proxies for Steam
The reasons split between the account side and the data side, and both are real.
- Community Market data at scale. Skin traders, price trackers, and flippers pull prices, active listings, and sales history off the Community Market on a schedule. That is a lot of automated requests to endpoints Steam rate-limits hard, so a single IP gets throttled fast.
- Account isolation and multi-accounting. Steam links accounts by IP and hardware. Several fresh logins from one home connection is the quick way to get them grouped, and a group is how one banned account drags its neighbors down. One clean IP per account keeps each identity separate.
- Boosting logins without a Steam Guard flag. The biggest account-side reason. When a booster in one country logs into a customer's account in another, Steam sees a new-location login and answers with a Steam Guard prompt and often a short trade lock. - Region store and Prime checks. Steam prices games, DLC, and add-ons differently by region, and people look before they spend. Read the region-lock catch below first, because a proxy alone does not change what your account is allowed to pay.
- Trading bots and drop farming. Many accounts hammering Steam's endpoints get rate-limited or flagged for automation, so spreading them across clean IPs keeps one address from getting cut off.
- Reaching Steam on a locked network. Schools and offices block Steam or its domains. A proxy tunnels the web side around that, and this is the one case where a free proxy is genuinely fine.
What Steam actually checks (and what a proxy touches)
Steam is judged by several systems, and a proxy touches only one of them. Understanding the rest is what stops you paying for a fix that was never going to work.
VAC bans the Steam account, not the IP. Valve Anti-Cheat bans the account from secured servers permanently and with no manual appeal, and a VAC ban also cuts off item drops and trading for the affected game (Steam's VAC FAQ). It follows the account, not the address, so changing your IP does nothing to a banned account.
Third-party anti-cheat bans hardware. Faceit, ESEA, and anti-cheats like Riot's Vanguard run kernel-level clients that fingerprint your machine and hand out hardware bans a fresh account on the same PC cannot escape. That ban lives in your hardware, not your IP, so a proxy does not touch it either.
Steam Guard and new-location logins. Here IP genuinely matters. A login from a new country or a datacenter range trips Steam Guard, can lock trading for a few days, and on a fresh account draws extra verification. A residential IP that matches where the account lives keeps a login quiet.
Region lock on the wallet. Steam ties your store region to your payment method's country and only moves it when you buy something with a locally issued method from the new country, then holds you to a 90-day cooldown before you can change region again (Steam Store Country). This is aimed straight at proxy and VPN pricing arbitrage. A proxy changes where you appear to browse, not the region your account can pay in.
Account linking by IP and hardware. Steam associates accounts that share an address or a machine. That is the mechanism the whole account-isolation job is built around, and the reason one clean IP per account is the rule.
So a proxy solves the IP, account-linking, and new-location-login dimension. It does nothing about a VAC ban, a hardware ban, or Steam's wallet region. Here is that line drawn plainly.
Scraping the Steam Community Market
The Market is where the data money is, and it is also where Steam's rate limiting bites hardest, so it deserves its own section.
Start with the sanctioned route and note where it runs out. The official Steam Web API is capped at 100,000 calls per day per key (Steam Web API Terms of Use), and it does not cover live Community Market pricing well, so most Market data work goes to the Market's own endpoints (the price and listings JSON the site itself calls). Those endpoints are undocumented and aggressively rate-limited. Steam bot developers report getting HTTP 429 (too many requests) after only a handful of requests from one IP, and Valve tightens the limit without notice (McKay Development, rate limit on steamcommunity.com). One address simply cannot pull the Market at any useful pace.

Mobile IPs come from 4G and 5G carriers, with many real subscribers behind each public IP through Carrier-Grade NAT, so Steam cannot flag one without hitting genuine users. It lasts longest for heavy trading or farming, at the highest price. Most Steam setups never need mobile proxies.
