Choosing a country, answered

How accurate is proxy country targeting?

Country level is reliable: the address genuinely belongs to a network registered in that country, which is what a site checks. City level is a different matter, because geolocation databases infer a city from registration and routing rather than measuring it, and they are frequently wrong by a wide margin. Treat country as dependable and city as a strong hint.

What happens if a country has no proxies available right now?

You get an error rather than a silent substitution, which is the behaviour worth insisting on from any provider. A pool that quietly falls back to a neighbouring country when yours is empty produces a job that appears to succeed while collecting data from the wrong market, and nothing in your logs will tell you.

Which proxy type should I use for a specific country?

Residential for anything the target screens, since it is the type with real coverage almost everywhere. ISP where you need one address in that country to persist for weeks, though coverage is genuinely thinner because each one depends on an arrangement made country by country. Mobile for the small set of platforms where nothing cheaper survives.

Do I need a proxy in the country, or just near it?

In it, when the thing you are measuring is decided by country: prices, currency, catalogue, search results and availability all key on the location a site reads from your address. Near it only helps with latency, and a neighbouring country will show you a neighbouring country's version of the page.

Why does the site still show my own country through a proxy?

Usually something other than the IP is giving you away. A region or currency cookie from an earlier visit, a browser reporting a time zone and language that contradict the exit, an account you are signed into that already knows where you are, or DNS resolving at home and routing you to nearby infrastructure. Test in a clean browser profile before blaming the address.

Can I target a city rather than a country?

Yes on residential, where targeting rides in the credentials, and it is worth checking whether you actually need it. Most sites vary by country and nothing finer, so city targeting adds cost and thins your available pool for no gain. Compare the same page from two cities in one country before paying for the precision.
