We Pointed Free Proxies at 21 AI Sites: Which Edges Block Them, Which Wave Them Through, and the Four Kinds of Wall

A measured study, 24 August 2026: three runs of 50 free proxies from our own list, each sent to a dozen AI sites. Only 20 to 27 of 50 could carry HTTPS at all. claude.ai challenged 18 of 27, Character.AI refused half, Poe challenged a third, while DeepSeek, Civitai, Janitor AI, Mistral and x.ai let every one through, Hugging Face answered three with a 429, and Google Flow showed four a country page. The numbers, the four different walls behind them, and what they mean if you rely on free proxies.

Proxies for Chai: The Country-Based Free Tier, a Mobile-Only App, and What an IP Does Not Decide

Proxies for Chai, the mobile companion-chat app: in January 2026 its founder said free usage was being switched off in more than twenty countries because ad revenue no longer covered GPU costs, with a Basic plan as the way back. How the app decides where you are is undocumented, a proxy only reaches a phone through Wi-Fi settings, and message limits and store region are per account. The honest version.

Proxies for Character.AI: Blocked Networks, the Waiting Room, and What an IP Can Fix

Proxies for Character.AI: which walls an IP address moves (a filtered network, a Cloudflare block on shared exits, isolating accounts) and which it never touches (the Waiting Room, the under-18 rule, a ban on the account).

Proxies for Civitai: The UK Block, Gated Downloads, Edge Rate Limits, and What an IP Can Fix

Proxies for Civitai: why the site blocked the United Kingdom on 24 July 2025 and what we saw from a UK exit, how gated downloads and Cloudflare edge limits behave when you pull models in bulk, which proxy type fits each job, and the account rules no IP changes.

Proxies for DeepSeek: Where It Is Blocked, What the Word Proxy Means Here, and the API Route

Proxies for DeepSeek: the block map with dates (Italy, South Korea, Germany, government devices), why a 'DeepSeek proxy' on Janitor AI is an API address and not an IP, what the server-busy errors were, and where a residential IP genuinely helps.

Proxies for ElevenLabs: The Free-Tier Abuse Flag, the Country List, and Why a Shared IP Is the Problem

Proxies for ElevenLabs: what the 'Unusual activity detected. Free Tier usage disabled' message actually detects, why a VPN or datacenter proxy makes it worse, the fix ElevenLabs itself names (a unique IP), the sanctioned-country block that catches cloud servers, and the limits no address changes.

Proxies for Hugging Face: The Per-IP Rate Limits, Why a Token Beats a Pool, and Where a Pool Still Helps

Proxies for Hugging Face: the Hub publishes per-IP limits for anonymous traffic (500 API calls, 3,000 file downloads and 100 pages per five minutes), its docs say a missing HF_TOKEN is the number-one cause of 429s, and we saw three free exits answered with 429 on the homepage. When a token is the fix, when a residential pool is, and what stays per account.

Proxies for Kling AI: The China Site Versus the Global Site, Queue Priority, and What an IP Does Not Buy

Proxies for Kling AI: why the video generator started as a China-only product behind a Chinese phone number and went global in July 2024, what separates the two sites today, where a proxy genuinely helps (filtered networks, a consistent country for an account), and what it never buys: credits, queue priority, or a phone number.

Proxies for Poe: Cloudflare Is the Wall, Billing Is the Table, and Geography Is Not the Problem

Proxies for Poe, Quora's multi-model chat app: the strictest Cloudflare edge we measured among AI sites, a points system counted per account and reset daily, an 84-row table of where subscriptions can be bought (not where the service works), and an API whose limit follows the key. What an address fixes, and what it cannot.

Proxies for Replika: The Italian Order, a Contract That Names Proxy IPs, and the Narrow Case That Remains

Proxies for Replika: Italy's data-protection authority ordered the app blocked in February 2023 and fined its maker EUR 5 million in May 2025; Replika's terms, revised March 2026, say a user blocked by IP address may not circumvent it with a proxy IP address; the free tier may be denied at Replika's discretion. What that leaves for a proxy, honestly.

Proxies for SillyTavern: the word means three different things inside the app. The Reverse Proxy field takes an LLM endpoint, the reverse-proxy guide is about exposing SillyTavern itself, and requestProxy in config.yaml routes your API calls through a real network proxy.
