When Character AI fails, the page you get instead says why. A Waiting Room means it is busy. A Cloudflare error from 520 to 524 means its servers are not answering properly. "Sorry, you have been blocked" means the site is up and refused this one request. A block page from your own network means a filter there stopped it.
What you cannot do is check an official status page. We looked on 11 October 2026, and the one Character.AI links to no longer works.
Which page are you looking at?
The Waiting Room means busy. Character.AI's help centre says why it exists: "High traffic can strain our server capacity and cause messages to generate more slowly." So it holds visitors "to manage peak loads". On how long, the help centre says: "Usually just 1-2 minutes or less. If traffic suddenly spikes, the wait time can be higher."
A Cloudflare error from 520 to 524 means down. Character.AI runs behind Cloudflare. These pages say that Cloudflare got no proper answer from the servers behind it. Error 521, for example, "occurs when the origin web server refuses connections from Cloudflare". Your device and your address are not the cause. Cloudflare's advice to visitors is short: "If you are a site visitor, report the problem to the site owner." Our guide to error 520 goes deeper.
"Sorry, you have been blocked" means up, and refused. Our own server got this page on the homepage, with the status 403. It explains: "This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. The action you just performed triggered the security solution." Its advice: "You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked." Include what you were doing and the Ray ID at the bottom of the page.
The terms close the other route. A blocked user agrees "not to implement any measures to circumvent such blocking (e.g., by masking your IP address or using a proxy IP address)". Our page on that block page explains what can trigger it.
A block page from your network means a filter. A school, office or home network can run one. Its page then comes from that network, not from Character.AI or Cloudflare. If the site opens on mobile data but not on that Wi-Fi, the network is the cause. Ask whoever runs it.
Does Character AI have a status page?
Not one that works. The footer of its help centre links "Status" to status.character.ai. On 11 October 2026, that address pointed to Atlassian Statuspage, to page 97ngkwrfz9bb. But it answered with a certificate made for another name. With the check turned off, it forwarded to the homepage of statuspage.io. The obvious guess, character.ai/status, gave a 404.

Searches also turn up characteraistatus.statuspage.io. It says "All Systems Operational". Its parts are named "API (example)" and "Management Portal (example)", and its one incident is called "This is an example incident". Those are placeholders, not a record of real servers.
It is also a different page. Atlassian's docs give each page a code, and the address must point to <PAGE_CODE>.stspg-customer.com. This page's code is q9lnc74fs33g, not 97ngkwrfz9bb. On a working status page the two agree, as they do for GitHub's. Who made the look-alike, it does not say.
Down for everyone, or just for you?
Three checks settle it without a status page:
- Read the page you get, using the four cases above. Only the Waiting Room and the Cloudflare errors from 520 to 524 point to Character.AI itself.
- Try another network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. If it works there, the first network is the cause, or its address was blocked.
- Ask people elsewhere. The help centre's footer links to Character.AI's Discord and to r/CharacterAI on Reddit.
A ping proves little. Both addresses of character.ai belong to Cloudflare's network, AS13335, and a ping to character.ai got replies. Cloudflare answers for the site even when the servers behind it are down. Error 521 exists for exactly that case.
Is the old site down, or is Character AI shutting down?
Neither. The old beta site is retired: beta.character.ai answers with a permanent redirect, HTTP 308, to character.ai. Guides that still warn about outages on the beta are out of date.
Character.AI's blog has announced no shutdown either. We read its five newest posts on 11 October 2026, and none of them mentions one. The newest, on 28 September 2026, introduced PipSqueak 3, ShortSqueak and (c.ai) lite.
What a proxy or VPN changes here
Nothing that helps. A Waiting Room and a server error sit on Character.AI's side, and a new address shortens neither. For a block, the terms forbid getting around it with a proxy. A network filter is the rule of whoever runs that network.
A proxy matters in one case: a network that sends all traffic through one, as some company networks do. Our page on proxies for Character.AI covers that. Our test of free proxies shows how often the site refused them. Looking for something else to chat with? We checked ten Character AI alternatives.
What this page could not check
- A page cannot tell you whether Character AI is down at this moment. Ours shows 11 October 2026.
- Our server is a datacenter address, and the site's edge blocked it on the homepage. A home connection can get a different answer.
- We did not sign in, and we did not test the iOS and Android apps.
- Downdetector and two other outage trackers refused our server, so we did not read them.
- The help centre refused our server as well. We read its Waiting Room article through the Internet Archive's copy of 26 September 2026.
- We will run these checks again by 11 January 2027.
