Proxies for TCGplayer are the honest case in this set, the one where the first answer is "you might not need many." On 24 August 2026 we sent tcgplayer.com a plain request from a home connection and from a datacenter server. Both returned the homepage with no bot challenge, no Akamai or Cloudflare wall, no sensor cookie, and no fingerprint check, served from an Amazon CloudFront edge. A bare client just got the page. That is unusual in this batch, and it changes the advice: the question is not how to get past a wall, but when proxies are worth adding at all.
TCGplayer is the largest trading-card marketplace, covering Magic, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh and a growing list of games, and it is owned by eBay (Wikipedia, TCGplayer). Its data is a per-seller price spread, which is what makes it worth tracking, and its owner is a company with real anti-abuse capability, which is what makes proxies matter once you scale. Both facts shape a sensible setup.
Do you need proxies for TCGplayer?
For light reads, little. For volume, yes: US rotating residential proxies to spread the request rate and stay ordinary if the marketplace tightens under load. Datacenter is fine while the site is undefended but is first to be throttled.
The site was open, but the owner is eBay
The honest read of our test is that TCGplayer does not currently gate a plain client the way a defended retailer does. So for a slow read of a handful of cards, your own connection or a single proxy is enough, and paying for a large residential pool would be over-buying. This is the same honesty that applies to Kroger's public API: match the tool to the job, and do not sell infrastructure a light job does not need (proxies for Kroger).
Volume is where that flips. TCGplayer is an eBay subsidiary, and marketplaces at that scale meter and throttle by IP under sustained load even when they do not challenge a first request. The price is a per-seller spread
TCGplayer is a marketplace, so a card is not a price, it is a distribution of listings. Thousands of independent shops and individuals list the same card at different prices and conditions, alongside TCGplayer's own Market Price and its Direct inventory, and TCGplayer Direct carries a minimum price floor of $0.40 per eligible card (TCGplayer, Direct minimum pricing). A useful dataset captures the listing spread, the condition grade, and the Market Price, not one blended number, because the spread is the signal a reseller or a pricing model actually wants. Rotating residential IPs spread a large job across home connections that a marketplace treats as ordinary shoppers. If TCGplayer keeps its lighter posture, datacenter proxies remain usable for modest jobs, but residential is the durable choice as volume rises; the tradeoff is in datacenter vs residential proxies.

Start small and measure. Read at a modest rate from one IP first, and watch for throttling (slower responses, 429s, empty results) before scaling.
