Proxies for Final Fantasy XIV run into a happy surprise: most of what people want a proxy for, the game already does. You want to play on another region's worlds? What proxies are best for Final Fantasy XIV?
For carrying the session over a shorter path to the data center you visit, or keeping several accounts off one address, residential or ISP proxies (static residential) held sticky near that data center. Datacenter only for reaching the game on a network that blocks it. No proxy changes the account's region, the subscription, or your place in a login queue, because those follow the Square Enix account, not the IP. And because the game is TCP, a proxy that drops takes your session with it, so free and rotating options are wrong for play.
The account region is fixed; the data center is not
Two different things get called "region" in FFXIV, and separating them answers most of the proxy questions.
The account region is set when you register a game license to your Square Enix account: US, EU, or Japan, tied to that license, and you cannot mix regions or platforms on one account, each needing its own license. This is the region that decides your Mog Station billing and currency. A proxy does not change it, because it is an account setting backed by a payment method, not a read of your IP.
The data center is where you actually play, and here FFXIV is generous. There are twelve data centers across North America (Aether, Crystal, Dynamis, Primal), Europe (Chaos, Light), Oceania (Materia), and Japan (Elemental, Gaia, Mana, Meteor), and Data Center Travel lets a character visit other data centers from the character-selection screen regardless of the account's region. A US-region account can play on a European or Oceanian world today, with no proxy involved. Square Enix even recommends traveling to a lower-populated data center during congestion.
So the thing people most often want a proxy for, playing "in another region," is a built-in feature. What a proxy adds sits underneath it, in the network path.

Final Fantasy XIV's client talks to its worlds over TCP, so a SOCKS5 proxy relays the whole session, login through logout. That makes the honest proxy use in FFXIV a latency one. When you travel to a data center on another continent, your packets take the long way there, and a proxy with an exit near that data center can give them a shorter, cleaner path than your ISP's default routing, which sometimes helps and sometimes does not, depending on whose network is better between you and the servers. It is the same idea a gaming-VPN sells, done with a proxy you control, and it only makes sense when you route the session near the destination.
The flip side is the cost of getting it wrong. Because the session is one long TCP connection, a proxy that dies drops you mid-duty, and an exit far from the data center adds latency instead of removing it. So this is a job for a stable ISP or residential address placed deliberately, never a free or rotating one, and it is optional: many players leave the game direct and use a proxy only for the account side.
What a login queue is, and why a proxy does not touch it
During an expansion launch or a busy evening, worlds fill and hold new logins in a queue. It is worth being exact, because "proxy to skip the FFXIV queue" is a common and wrong search. A queue is the world rationing entry, and your place in it is set by when you arrived, not by where you connect from. Square Enix does prioritize paying subscribers over free-trial characters, but that is an account distinction, not an IP one, and the effective fix during congestion is Data Center Travel to a less crowded data center. A proxy changes your apparent location and nothing about how full a world is, so it cannot shorten a queue.
Why people use proxies for Final Fantasy XIV
- A shorter path to a distant data center. The honest latency use: an exit near the data center you travel to, carrying the TCP session, when your ISP's routing there is poor.
- Keeping accounts separate. A main and a second account, a static's shared administrative account. Square Enix can group accounts that share signals, so one clean address per account keeps a flag on one from reaching the rest. Account sharing and RMT are against the terms on any address.
- Reaching the game on a blocked network. Dorms and offices block the game or Mog Station, and a proxy tunnels the web side around it. The one job a free proxy can do.
- Region store and Mog Station checks. Viewing another region's Mog Station is a browser behind a proxy, though payment still follows the account's region and method.
- Queues and region-changing, which a proxy does not do. The built-in travel system and the account-based queue priority are the whole answer.
Which proxy type fits Final Fantasy XIV
ISP proxies are the static flavour of residential: one fixed address on always-on hardware, the right tool for carrying a session near a data center without the drop risk of a changing address, and for an account you play daily.

How to set it up
The account side is a browser job; the session side is a Proxifier job, and optional.

How many IPs, sticky versus rotating
For play, one stable address per data center you regularly travel to, held so the session never drops; for accounts, one sticky address each, in the account's region. Rotation has no place under a live MMO session.
