The two types trade speed against trust, and that trade is usually what decides whether a proxy that connects perfectly still gets you blocked.
The proxy types
Datacenter
The IP belongs to a hosting or cloud provider. Fast and cheap, and the easiest kind for a consumer site to flag, because whole hosting ranges get scored long before your individual request does.
Residential
The IP belongs to a real home internet connection. Slower and pricier, and trusted for exactly that reason: to a website it looks like an ordinary person, not a server.
Why it decides most blocks
When a target keeps blocking you while every proxy tests as working, the type is almost always the reason. Read the network column, not just the status.

How can you tell if a proxy is datacenter or residential?
From the network it exits on. We look up the autonomous system behind the IP and read whether it is a hosting or cloud provider, which reads as datacenter, or a consumer ISP, which reads as residential. It is a property of the address, so it does not depend on the proxy connecting.
What is the difference between a datacenter and a residential proxy?
Datacenter proxies run on servers in a data centre: fast, cheap, and easy for a site to spot because entire hosting ranges are scored as non-human. Residential proxies exit through real home connections: slower and pricier, but trusted, because to a website they look like an ordinary visitor.
Which is better, datacenter or residential?
It depends on the target. For sites that do not fight bots hard, datacenter is faster and cheaper and perfectly fine. For anything with real anti-bot defences, the address being residential is often what decides whether you get through at all. The right answer is the cheapest type that the target will accept.
How accurate is the classification?
It is a best-effort read of network data, not a guarantee. Most ranges classify cleanly, but a datacenter that resells space to a residential ISP, or a mislabelled block, can read the wrong way. That is why the checker shows you the actual ISP and autonomous system beside the tag, so you can judge a borderline case yourself.
