Pinging the IP tells you little, because a proxy can answer a ping and refuse to relay. So we time a real request through the proxy, sampled more than once, which is the latency that actually affects your work.

What the number means,and what it does not
A low ping is not the same as a fast proxy, and confusing the two is the most common mistake here. Latency is the wait; bandwidth is the volume.
Low latency
Under a couple of hundred milliseconds feels instant. This is what matters for many small requests, logins, form posts, price checks, where you make a lot of round trips.
High latency
Past a second, everything you do through the proxy waits that long, on every single request. It usually means the proxy is far away or overloaded.
Latency is not speed
Latency is the wait; bandwidth is the volume. A proxy can have a low ping and still download slowly, or a high ping with plenty of bandwidth. For throughput, use the proxy speed test instead.

How do I test proxy latency or ping?

What is a good proxy ping?
For most work, under about 200ms feels fast and anything under half a second is usable. It depends on distance: a proxy on another continent will always have a higher round trip, and that is physics, not a fault. Sort by latency and keep the lowest ones for anything you run in parallel.
Why is my proxy latency so high?
Usually distance or load. A proxy far from both you and your target adds a long round trip on every request, and a shared, overloaded proxy makes you queue behind everyone else on it. Residential proxies also tend to have higher latency, because the traffic really does traverse a home connection.
Is a low-ping proxy always fast?
No, and this is the common mix-up. Ping is the wait before data starts moving; bandwidth is how fast it moves once it does. A proxy can answer quickly and still trickle a download, or lag on the first byte and then transfer at full speed. If you care about volume rather than responsiveness, run the speed test, not the ping test.
Does latency or bandwidth matter more?
For lots of small requests, latency wins: every login and form post pays the round trip, so a snappy proxy feels fast. For moving large amounts of data, bandwidth wins. This tool measures latency; the proxy speed test measures throughput, so between them you get both halves of the answer.
