Spain has some of the best fibre coverage in Europe, reaching close to nine in ten premises against an EU average in the mid-thirties, and then did almost none of the IPv6 that usually rides along with it, sitting near ten percent while France and Germany run far higher. That combination is unusual, and it has a consequence: with great fibre but little IPv6, Spanish IPv4 gets squeezed, and a lot of it ends up shared behind carrier-grade NAT rather than handed to each home.
At the same time the market has concentrated hard. Four mobile networks became three, one of them now selling more than a dozen brands over a single network, and Spanish fibre has been folded into a couple of big wholesale vehicles jointly owned by rivals. To take just the recent ones: Vodafone Spain was bought by the investment firm Zegona in 2024 and now only licenses the Vodafone brand, Orange and MasMovil merged into MasOrange, and the Spanish state itself bought around ten percent of Telefonica in 2024 to sit alongside a Gulf investor on the register of the country's largest network.
