Proxies for American Eagle run into Akamai at the door and a multi-brand catalog behind it. On 24 August 2026 we sent ae.com a plain request from a home connection and from a datacenter server. Both returned HTTP 403 with Akamai's Access Denied page. The wall is Akamai Bot Manager, and it refused a bare client from either address, so the setup has to start with a real browser, not just a clean IP.
American Eagle Outfitters is a Gen-Z apparel company, and the interesting part for a data project is that ae.com is really several brands wearing one storefront: American Eagle, Aerie and OFFLINE by Aerie, with Todd Snyder and Unsubscribed in the wider portfolio (AEO, brands). Aerie runs frequent limited drops, the company sells directly in three countries and through licensees in more than thirty, and Real Rewards ties the accounts together.

Akamai judged the request
Both test requests got a 403 from AkamaiGHost with an Access Denied page and a Tealeaf TLTUID cookie, and no product. Akamai decided on the request itself, which is the pair of things a bare client gets wrong: the TLS handshake (the JA3/JA4 signature read before any HTTP) and the header order a real browser sends with client hints (what is JA3/JA4 fingerprinting). Past the door, Akamai Bot Manager keeps scoring through its sensor and the _abck cookie, with per-IP rate limits on top (how to scrape past Akamai). The proxy gives the browser a US residential address and spreads the request rate; the browser does the rest.
One storefront, several brands, several countries
Two structural facts set the scope of an AEO data project.
The catalog is multi-brand. American Eagle, Aerie and OFFLINE by Aerie share the site and the account system but are distinct brands with their own products, sizing and drop calendars. A complete read treats each as its own surface, and Aerie's limited drops behave like small hyped releases, where a sticky session on a product page reads as a shopper waiting for a restock rather than a crawler. The footprint is multi-country. AEO sells directly in the United States, Canada and Mexico and reaches more than thirty countries through license partners, and those sites price in local currency with their own assortment (Synchrony, AEO partnership release). Reading a country's real price needs an exit in that country, and the licensee markets are separate operations rather than the US catalog restated, so a cross-country dataset has to be built market by market. Drive a real browser so the sensor sets _abck, and keep the cookies across the run (proxies for Playwright). Read each brand as its own surface, and label every price with its brand. Staying unblocked
- Do not retry the 403 without a browser. Akamai will keep refusing; the fix is the sensor.
- Keep the sensor cookies. Discarding
_abckrestarts the sensor. - Read each brand separately. Blending American Eagle and Aerie prices is a data error.
- Match the exit to the market. A US exit on the Canadian site reads the wrong currency and flags the session.

What a proxy does not do here
A proxy gives a browser a trusted residential address and keeps accounts apart. It does not run Akamai's sensor, does not merge the brand catalogs, and does not equalize the country prices. Scraping ae.com runs against AEO's terms of use, a risk that stays with you regardless of the IPs.
