MobileHop sells one product. Not a catalogue with a residential tier, an ISP tier and a datacenter tier stacked underneath it, but a single thing: a dedicated 5G modem, rented for a length of time you pick. The company calls it SingleHop, and on 10 August 2026 its pages carried two prices for it.

$8.00 per port for one day. $5.00 per port for one hour.

Read those two figures again before going further, because the obvious conclusion is the wrong one.

The hour costs more than the day

$5.00 is the smaller number on the page and the more expensive way to buy. It is the price of sixty minutes. $8.00 is the price of twenty-four hours, which works out at roughly $0.33 for each one. Buying the same modem by the hour costs about fifteen times as much per hour as buying it by the day (both figures read 10 August 2026).

The arithmetic sharpens the moment a job runs long. Two hours at $5.00 each is $10.00, and a full day is $8.00, so from the second hour onward you are paying more for a sliver of a day than the whole day costs. The hourly option is the cheaper of the two for exactly one hour and not a minute past it. Turned around: $3.00 on top of the hourly price buys twenty-three additional hours.

None of this makes MobileHop's pricing a trick. A one-hour rental costs a vendor nearly as much to provision as a one-day rental, since the SIM, the modem and the setup work are identical either way, so charging a premium on the shortest window is ordinary. The trap is in the reading, not the pricing. A price is not a rate until you know what unit it is attached to, and comparing two numbers that carry different units is the most common way to talk yourself into the wrong purchase. Is HProxy a good MobileHop alternative?

For some jobs, and not for others. MobileHop rents a whole physical modem by the hour or the day. We sell bandwidth by the gigabyte: residential at $0.50/GB from the first gigabyte, alongside ISP at $2.50/IP, datacenter from $0.10/IP, and mobile as a monthly port at $10/month, or $25/month for a dedicated one.

Those are different products on different meters. A per-gigabyte rate does not divide into a per-modem-per-day rate, and anyone who declares one cheaper without first asking what you are doing is guessing. So this comparison is about job shape rather than a price war, because on job shape there is a real answer.

What a rented modem gives you that a balance does not

Three things, and each of them is worth paying for in the right situation.

A carrier IP nobody else is touching. A dedicated modem is one SIM on one carrier connection, and while you have it rented, the exit address is yours alone. That matters because mobile IPs are the hardest addresses for a site to block: carriers put thousands of real subscribers behind each public address, so a site that bans one is banning a crowd of its own customers. Renting the hardware means no other buyer is spending that IP's reputation while you rely on it.

Rotation you control to the second. Reboot the modem and the carrier hands back a fresh IP. That is rotation on demand rather than rotation on a pool's schedule, and for work where the timing of an IP change is part of the method, being able to say "now" is the feature.

Bandwidth that is not metered. Traffic through the modem is not billed by volume, so a heavy burst costs the same as a light one. Per-gigabyte billing handles that shape badly by design. If a single identity needs to pull a lot in a short window, a flat rental is simply the right instrument, and we are not going to argue otherwise about our own meter.

Where the model stops working

Many identities at once. One modem is one IP. Ten simultaneous identities means ten ports, which is $80.00 a day at the published rate, and a hundred means $800.00 (10 August 2026). Renting physical hardware does not scale sideways, and no amount of good pricing changes that, because the cost is a real device sitting on a real carrier plan.

Anything that runs for weeks. Thirty consecutive days at $8.00 comes to $240.00. MobileHop's pages publish no monthly rate and no discount for longer bookings, so whether a long rental would actually be billed that way is not something the page answers, and we are not going to assume it either direction. What we can say is that the only published path to a month is thirty daily rentals.

A window you cannot predict. This is where the hourly rate turns from a convenience into a penalty. A job you expect to finish in an hour, that instead needs four, costs $20.00 against the $8.00 you would have paid by taking the day at the start. Guessing your window wrong is a fifteen-times mistake, and short-run work is exactly the work whose duration is hardest to call in advance.

What the pages do not say

Two prices is all that was on record on 10 August 2026, and it is worth being precise about how little that is. There was no plan ladder, so we cannot show entry and floor rates the way we can for vendors who publish tiers. There was no monthly price. There was no stated discount for renting several ports, or for renting one for a long stretch, which is the sort of thing plenty of vendors do quietly on request. There was no published pool size, because a dedicated modem product does not really have one in the sense a rotating network does.

That is a short list of unknowns, and we would rather print it than fill the gaps with plausible guesses. If you are seriously considering a long or multi-port booking, the numbers above are the ones to ask MobileHop about directly, because the page will not tell you.

Who should pick which

Pick MobileHop if you need a dedicated 5G modem to yourself for a bounded stretch of time, you want the IP to change when you say so rather than when a pool says so, and your traffic is heavy on a single identity. For that shape, a flat rental beats a metered gigabyte, and taking the day at $8.00 rather than the hour at $5.00 is nearly always the right call unless you are certain about the sixty minutes.

Pick HProxy if you need many identities at the same time, or a job that runs for weeks rather than hours, or volume you cannot forecast. Residential is $0.50/GB from the first gigabyte with no plan to pick, falling to $0.44/GB at 2,000 GB+, so 20 GB costs $10 and the balance sits there until you spend it.
