The real cause was that TF2 is free-to-play, so cheat operators could spin up endless throwaway accounts faster than delayed bans could catch them, and Valve's mid-2024 game bans finally cleared most of them from Casual. Free-to-play made accounts disposable, and that was the real problem

The structural fact behind the bot crisis is worth stating because it clears up the proxy misconception. TF2 is free-to-play, and that is a hard problem for anti-cheat: delayed banning, which works for paid games because a banned account costs the cheater a purchase, means little when a cheater can make joke account after joke account for free. That is why bots overran Casual, and it had nothing to do with proxies. Valve's fix in mid-2024 was game bans that cleared most bots from Casual, applied to the accounts and the behavior. A proxy was never the mechanism, and it is never the fix; the account economy was.

Being direct about it: a proxy does not make a cheat bot work, hide it from VAC, or restore a banned cheating account, and HProxy does not sell proxies for that. The uses that remain are the trading economy and ordinary account separation, and both are legitimate.

The legitimate use: trading-bot accounts

TF2's item economy is real and large, and it runs partly on automated trading bots, the kind that back sites like backpack.tf, which are Steam accounts that hold inventory and execute trades automatically at listed prices. This is a legitimate service, and it is where a proxy has an honest role. A trading operation runs several Steam accounts, and Steam can group accounts that share an address, so giving each trading account its own residential or ISP address keeps them looking like separate traders rather than a cluster from one connection. Because a trading account wants a stable identity that Steam sees consistently, a static ISP address per account is the natural fit.

Be exact about the boundary. A proxy separates addresses; it does not price items, execute trades, or exempt an account from Steam's trading rules and holds. The trading logic and the Steam trade system are their own topic; the proxy's job is only to keep the accounts from sharing one IP. The match is UDP, and the region is matchmaking

The game side is closed to a proxy. TF2's live match traffic is UDP, which a proxy pulled from a list cannot carry, so a proxy routes the Steam sign-in and store and leaves the match connecting direct, which is why it does not lower your ping. Your server comes from matchmaking or the community server browser, not from an address, so a proxy does not pick your region either. Playing TF2 through a proxy is not a thing that works, the same as its Valve sibling in proxies for Counter Strike.

What a proxy does help

The trading and account side. Keeping legitimate trading or personal accounts off a single shared address, so a group does not form, and reaching Steam on a school or office network that blocks it. Regional store research is a browser behind a proxy, with Steam's wallet region still governing payment. None of it touches the match, VAC, or the game bans that cleared the bots.
