Proxies for Rust run into a wall on the first question almost everyone asks, which is whether a new IP undoes a ban. For the bans people fear most in Rust, the answer is no, and the reason is worth understanding before spending a cent: Rust's anti-cheat judges your machine and your Steam account, never your address. Where an IP does matter is a narrower and less-discussed place, the community servers where admins run their own moderation, and that is the honest edge a proxy has in this game.
Rust is a Steam game with a brutal ban culture, a weekly detection schedule, and a wipe cycle that resets the map but never the ban list. All of that shapes what a proxy can and cannot do, and this page lays it out: the four kinds of ban and which one an address touches, why the match is UDP, which proxy type fits, and where a proxy stops.
What proxies are best for Rust?
For keeping several Steam accounts off one shared address, and for reaching Steam on a network that blocks it, residential proxies pinned to your country and held sticky, or an ISP proxy (static residential) for an account you play daily. Datacenter only for the blocked-network case. No proxy type carries the match, which is UDP, and none of them lifts an EAC, VAC, or Facepunch ban, because those read the account and the machine. The one IP-level block a clean address interacts with is a community server's own ban, and evading that breaks the server's rules.
Four kinds of ban, and the one an IP touches
Rust stacks several ban systems, and telling them apart is what stops you buying an address to fix something an address cannot reach.
EAC bans the account and the machine. Rust runs Easy Anti-Cheat, the kernel-level system Epic owns, which checks memory integrity and scans for injected code and known cheats while the game runs. An EAC ban follows the Steam account and can flag the hardware. It does not read your IP.
VAC bans on secured servers. Valve Anti-Cheat issues its own bans when it catches cheats on a VAC-secured server, which in Rust's default browser is every server. A VAC ban is on the Steam account, permanent, and again nothing to do with an address.
Facepunch sets the policy and runs the waves. EAC and VAC handle detection, but Facepunch, Rust's developer, decides enforcement, and it is aggressive: a public weekly ban wave, often on Thursdays, with approximate counts posted to the community. Crucially, a server wipe resets the world and never the bans, so a banned account stays banned across every wipe. None of this is IP-based.
Community servers ban by whatever they choose. This is the exception, and the only place a proxy interacts with a Rust ban. Community and modded servers are run by their own admins, who moderate their own player base and frequently ban both the Steam ID and the IP address to make evasion harder. A recycled or shared address can therefore inherit a stranger's server ban, and a clean address can restore access to that one server, if the admins permit it. It is their server and their rules, and dodging a ban you earned there is against them.

Like most real-time games, Rust sends its gameplay over UDP: movement, building, combat, the constant stream a survival game needs. HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS4 proxies carry only TCP, and SOCKS5's UDP relaying is something almost no proxy from a list implements, so a proxy on your system routes Steam's web traffic and leaves the game connecting direct from your real address. That means a proxy does not lower your ping, does not change which server you can reach, and does not sit between you and a community server at the packet level. It works on the Steam account, the store, and the launcher, and that is the extent of it.
Why people use proxies for Rust
- Keeping several Steam accounts separate. A main and a legitimate second account, a smurf for a fresh wipe, an account for a friend group's community server. Steam links accounts by shared signals, and community servers link by IP, so one clean address per account keeps them apart. Steam's own multi-account and VAC mechanics are in proxies for Steam.
- Community-server access. Where an admin has IP-banned an address you now hold, or where you want a second account not to share a network with your first on a server that links them. Narrow, and real.
- Reaching Steam on a blocked network. Dorms, schools, and offices block Steam or its domains, and a proxy tunnels the web side around it. The one job a free proxy can do.
- Account creation at any scale. New Steam accounts for wipes or for a group, created from distinct residential addresses so they do not start life in one flagged cluster.
- The anti-cheat and ping fears, which a proxy does not touch. EAC and VAC read the machine and account; the match is UDP. Neither is an address problem.
Which proxy type fits Rust
Residential proxies are IPs on genuine home lines, pinned to a country and held sticky, so a Steam sign-in and a community-server connection read as an ordinary player. If the category is new, what is a residential proxy covers where the addresses come from.
ISP proxies are static residential addresses: one address, yours for as long as you keep it. This is the home for an account you play every day, and the tidy answer where a community server links accounts by IP and you want each account on its own fixed address.
Datacenter proxies draw more scrutiny on a Steam sign-in than a home address does, and fit only the blocked-network case.
Mobile proxies are the carrier tier, which this job never calls for.

How many IPs, sticky versus rotating
Count accounts, not bandwidth. One sticky address per account, in your country, held indefinitely; a community server that links by IP is exactly why each account wants its own fixed address, and rotation has no place under a live account. A free proxy can get Steam past a dorm or office block, and when it dies you just grab another.
