Best Buy matches its own lower price if it drops during the return and exchange period, upon request, so tracking a price pays off even after you buy. For data, Best Buy's Developer API gives each product's sale price, regular price and stock, but its terms forbid storing that content for more than 72 hours. Best Buy's site terms let software agents in only through its authorized or published methods, named and on behalf of one logged-in customer.
Does Best Buy match a lower price after you buy?
Yes, for its own price. Best Buy's Price Match Guarantee says: "If we lower our in-store, online or app price during the return and exchange period, we will match our lower price, upon request."
At the time of sale, it also matches the current price of "key online and local competitors", which it calls Qualified Competitors. The product must be new, sold from Best Buy, and a matching brand, model number and color. These are some of the exclusions Best Buy lists:
| excluded | in Best Buy's words |
|---|---|
| other sellers | "items sold by Marketplace Sellers". |
| some items | "clearance, refurbished and open-box items". |
| short sales | "special daily or hourly sales". |
| Thanksgiving | items at a Qualified Competitor "the Thursday before Thanksgiving Day through the Monday after Thanksgiving". |
You ask through Best Buy Chat, by phone at 1-888-BEST BUY, or in a store with the competitor's ad. For an order you already have, Best Buy says "you can check price match availability on your Order Details page". Best Buy allows "One price match at the time of purchase, per identical item, per customer".
How a price tracker helps
A tracker watches the price for you, so you notice a drop while your return period is still open. The build-your-own guides we read come from proxy sellers and scraping services, and they build scrapers. None of them mentions Best Buy's own API or Best Buy's terms.
Best Buy's Developer API
Best Buy runs a Developer API with data on its products, prices and stock. These fields matter for a tracker:
| field | what Best Buy's documentation says |
|---|---|
| salePrice | "Current item selling price". |
| regularPrice | "Product's regular selling price". |
| onSale | "Identifies if sale price is less than regular price". |
| priceUpdateDate | "Date and time product price was last updated". |
| onlineAvailability | "Identifies if a product can be purchased online". |
| inStoreAvailability | "Identifies if a product is available for purchase in a Best Buy store". |
Some prices may be held back. The documentation lists two restrictions for its priceRestriction field. Under a Minimum Advertised Price restriction, the actual selling price may not be shown until the product is in the cart. Under an In-Checkout Rebate, it "may not be shown until checkout". Each key may make 5 calls a second and 50,000 a day. Past the limit, the API answers with HTTP 403.
The developer terms forbid you to "store or cache any Content except on a temporary basis not to exceed seventy-two (72) hours". A price history kept for weeks from the API would break that rule. The documentation says the same in short: you "agree not to cache any content except on a temporary basis".
What Best Buy's terms say about bots and agents
Best Buy's Terms and Conditions were last updated on 25 September 2026. They define a Digital Agent as any software, "including those enabled by AI", that acts on someone's instruction. A price tracker fits that definition. Such an agent may use Best Buy only "through the use of Best Buy's expressly authorized or published methods". It must name itself in every request, such as "DigitalAgent/[name]", and act for "a single, identified, authenticated, and logged-in customer".
The terms also say Digital Agents "must not conceal or obfuscate their activity or otherwise attempt to appear as if they are human". They may not "complete, circumvent, compromise, or prevent the use of any CAPTCHAs" either. Elsewhere, the terms forbid "misrepresenting the identity of a user" and "using buying agents".
What bestbuy.com did when our server asked
We asked bestbuy.com for its terms, its Price Match Guarantee, a product page and robots.txt from our server in St. Louis on 4 October 2026. The terms, the price match page and robots.txt answered normally. The product page's connection was reset before any page came back.
Where a proxy fits
For a Best Buy price tracker, a proxy does not fit. Best Buy's terms require an agent to name itself and forbid it to appear human, while a proxy changes where a request seems to come from. The Developer API runs on your own key.
For other work where a proxy is allowed, what a residential proxy is explains the type. Residential traffic without city targeting starts at $0.44/GB, and every plan is on our pricing page.
The limits of this page
We read Best Buy's terms, its Price Match Guarantee and its developer documentation from our server in St. Louis on 4 October 2026. We did not get an API key, call the API, sign in or buy anything, and the product page refused our server. The list of Qualified Competitors was not in the text we could read, and we do not know how Best Buy applies its Digital Agent section to Developer API keys. This page is due for a check by 4 January 2027.
