The internet is sure that a VPN gets you cheaper flights. Switch your location to a poorer country, the story goes, and the same seat drops in price. It is one of the most repeated travel hacks online, and it is mostly wrong. We run a proxy network, so we had every commercial reason to tell you the myth is true and sell you the tool to exploit it. What the tests actually find

Start with the measurements, because the myth rarely does. When EXPERTE tested four long routes (London to New York, Munich to Melbourne, Berlin to Stockholm, Los Angeles to Tokyo) from Germany, the United States, Portugal and Japan on Skyscanner, clearing cache and cookies between every session, the prices came back identical every time, and the authors reported they had yet to find a single confirmed case of someone booking a cheaper flight with a VPN (EXPERTE, cheaper flights with a VPN).

A larger picture is a little kinder to the myth, but only a little. A 2024 study cited across the industry ran thousands of searches across a dozen platforms from many country IPs and found that only about 18% of searches produced a meaningful difference of more than $50, with the biggest gaps on regional online travel agencies and airlines running local promotions, while the major global platforms like Google Flights and Kayak showed little variation.

The honest read is that location switching is not a reliable discount. It does nothing on most searches, occasionally helps on a specific regional site or a local promotion, and is not the dependable cheat the headlines promise.

The narrow thing that is actually true

There is a real effect underneath the myth, and it is worth stating precisely because the myth exaggerates it. Airlines file some fares by point of sale, the market a booking appears to originate from, and they quote prices in that market's currency with that market's taxes. So a route can genuinely cost less bought as a resident of the airline's home country, and the same seat can carry a different tax and currency in another market.

That effect is real on some routes and some carriers, and absent on many others, which is exactly why a location switch works sometimes and fails most of the time.
