An agent inherits the reputation of the IP it runs from
An autonomous agent usually runs on a server, which means it acts from a datacenter address, the single most flagged kind of IP there is. However clever the agent, a site that screens by network sees a hosting range and treats it as a bot before the agent does anything at all.
A residential exit removes that network tell. The agent still has to behave plausibly, but it is now judged on what it does rather than dismissed for where it connects from, which is what lets multi-step tasks, logging in, navigating, completing a flow, actually run to the end.
One agent, one identity
Continuity matters more for agents than for scrapers. A task that spans a login, a session and several pages breaks the moment the IP changes underneath it, so an agent usually wants a sticky residential session or a static ISP address that holds for the whole run, not per-request rotation.
Where you are fielding many agents at once, give each its own exit. Ten agents behind one address look like one confused user; ten agents on ten residential IPs look like ten ordinary people, which is the whole point.

Why does an AI agent need a proxy?

Should an agent's IP rotate or stay fixed?
Stay fixed for the length of a task. Agents do multi-step work, login, navigation, checkout, and a changing IP breaks the session. A sticky residential session or a static ISP address is the right shape; per-request rotation suits stateless scraping, not agents.
Can I run many agents at once?
Yes, and each should have its own exit. Many agents sharing one IP correlate straight back to each other. One residential address per agent keeps them independent, the same principle as one proxy per antidetect-browser profile.
