Yahoo's terms forbid collecting data from its services by automated means without its express, prior permission. Robots, spiders and scrapers are named. Its own route to historical prices is a CSV download for Yahoo Finance Gold subscribers. The open source library yfinance says it is not affiliated with Yahoo. It calls the API "intended for personal use only". A proxy does not change any of this.
What Yahoo's terms say
Yahoo's terms of service were last updated on 4 August 2026. They cover all of Yahoo's brands and services. For US users, they name Yahoo Finance LLC as the company that provides Yahoo Finance.
| rule | what the terms say |
|---|---|
| automated collection | No collecting of data "using any automated means", "including but not limited to robots, spiders, scrapers, data mining tools", "for any purpose without our express, prior permission". |
| volume | No "commercial activity on non-commercial properties or apps or high volume activity without our prior written consent". |
| competing data | No use of its data "to create any database, archive, mobile application, data feed, widget or any other aggregated data source" that competes with Yahoo or its data providers. |
| software | Yahoo's software and APIs come with "a personal, royalty-free, non-transferable, non-assignable, revocable, and non-exclusive license". |
What the API terms say
Yahoo's developer API terms are marked REV 3-2022. They say its APIs "may be subject to rate limits at Yahoo's absolute and sole discretion". To confirm that an app is an acceptable use, or to ask for higher limits, Yahoo asks developers to register the app. They also forbid earning money from the APIs, unless the API documents allow it. Otherwise it takes Yahoo's "prior, express, written permission".
Downloading historical data
Yahoo's help says plainly: "Downloading historical data is available with a Yahoo Finance Gold subscription." Gold subscribers open Historical Data above a quote's chart and press Download for a CSV file. Some instruments have no download "due to data licensing restrictions", and the Download option is then missing.
The routes Yahoo itself offers, side by side:
| route | who | what it gives |
|---|---|---|
| Historical Data download | Gold subscribers | a CSV file, where data licences allow it. |
| Yahoo's developer APIs | developers who accept the API terms | Yahoo's APIs in general, with rate limits set by Yahoo. The pages we read name none for Finance data. |
| the website | anyone | pages to read, with historical prices for most quotes, but no automated collection without permission. |
What robots.txt says
The robots.txt of finance.yahoo.com shuts 44 named crawlers out of the whole site. They share one group, among them CCBot, Bytespider and Scrapy. Every other crawler is kept out of addresses such as /xhr, /_td_api, /caas/ and /screener/insider/. The robots.txt standard, RFC 9309, says its rules "are not a form of access authorization", so the terms still decide.
The libraries on GitHub
The yfinance library has 25,423 stars on GitHub. Its README says it is "not affiliated, endorsed, or vetted by Yahoo" and uses "Yahoo's publicly available APIs". It is "intended for research and educational purposes", and it tells users to read Yahoo's terms. In its words: "the Yahoo! finance API is intended for personal use only."
A search of GitHub for "yahoo finance scraper" lists 479 projects. One project copies Yahoo Finance data to a dataset on Hugging Face about once a week. That way its users avoid "Yahoo Finance's real-time rate limit". Scraping and proxy companies publish guides to it as well.
Where a proxy fits
For Yahoo Finance, a proxy does not fit. The terms forbid automated collection without permission, whatever address it comes from. The API terms leave rate limits to Yahoo. For historical prices, Gold is Yahoo's own route.
For other work where a proxy is allowed, what a residential proxy is explains the type. How to check if a proxy is working shows how to test one. Residential traffic without city targeting starts at $0.44/GB, and every plan is on our pricing page.
The limits of this page
We read Yahoo's terms, its developer API terms, one help article and the robots.txt of finance.yahoo.com. We read them from our server in St. Louis on 4 October 2026. We loaded no quote page by script, did not subscribe to Gold and did not call any API. We do not know how Yahoo applies its terms to libraries such as yfinance. This page is due for a check by 4 January 2027.
