Ghjrcb is прокси, the Russian word for proxy, typed while the keyboard was set to English. A Russian keyboard carries two alphabets on the same keys. The six keys that spell прокси in Cyrillic type g, h, j, r, c and b in the English layout. Whoever searched for ghjrcb was looking for a proxy. A proxy is a server that sends your web requests for you, so the website sees its IP address in place of yours.

The rest of this page shows the key map from Microsoft's own Russian layout. It also counts how often people make the slip, using Google Keyword Planner. Then it lists the shortcut that switches the layout back on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone, and explains what a proxy does.
Why прокси turns into ghjrcb
The standard Russian layout puts a Cyrillic letter on every key that types a Latin letter in English. The layout that is switched on decides which of the two letters appears on the screen. Microsoft publishes this layout as KLID 00000419 and names the letter on every key. With the English layout on, the six keys of прокси type this:
| Letter | Unicode name | English key |
|---|---|---|
| п | PE | G |
| р | ER | H |
| о | O | J |
| к | KA | R |
| с | ES | C |
| и | I | B |
Read the right column from top to bottom and it spells ghjrcb. The same keys turn привет (hello) into ghbdtn and яндекс into zyltrc.
The word itself is the normal Russian word for proxy. Microsoft's help page "Use a proxy server in Windows" carries the Russian title "Использование прокси-сервера в Windows", with прокси where the English says proxy.
The same slip in the other direction
The mistake also runs the other way. Type proxy while the Russian layout is on, and the screen shows зкщчн. On that layout, the keys p, r, o, x and y carry з, к, щ, ч and н.
Ukrainian keyboards add one more spelling. Microsoft's Ukrainian help page writes the word as проксі, in "Використання проксі-сервера у Windows". On the Ukrainian layout, KLID 00000422, the letter і sits on the S key. The Ukrainian word typed on English keys therefore comes out as ghjrcs.
The same slip in other alphabets
The same slip happens on every layout we checked. We typed proxy through Microsoft's Greek, Thai, Arabic, Persian and Hebrew layouts. Then we looked up each result in Keyword Planner, in its own language, on November 4, 2026:
| Typed | Meant | Searches a month |
|---|---|---|
| προχυ | proxy, Greek keys | 40 |
| ยพนปั | proxy, Thai keys | 20 |
| حقخءغ | proxy, Arabic keys | 10 |
| حقخطغ | proxy, Persian keys | 10 |
| פרםסט | proxy, Hebrew keys | 10 |
| pruexh | פרוקסי, English keys | 10 |
The last row runs the other way. פרוקסי is the Hebrew word Microsoft uses for proxy, and typed with the English layout on it comes out as pruexh. The Kazakh layout types прокси as ghjrcb, like the Russian one. On the Belarusian layout проксі comes out as ghjrcb too, because і sits on the B key, where the Russian layout keeps и.
Korean and Japanese work differently. Microsoft writes proxy as 프록시 in Korean and as プロキシ in Japanese. Keyword Planner gives vmfhrtl, 프록시 typed on English keys, exactly the 40,500 monthly searches of 프록시 itself. It gives purokisi, the Japanese word typed in plain Latin letters, exactly the 201,000 of プロキシ. Google's Keyword Planner counts each pair as one search, as it does with plain typos.
How a layout slip differs from a typo
A typo changes a letter or two, usually to a key next door. Google's search team gives the example of y typed for u, because the two keys sit side by side on an English keyboard. A layout slip keeps every finger movement right and changes every letter. That is why ghjrcb looks like a random string, even though the person typed прокси correctly.
How many people search with the wrong layout
Google Keyword Planner reports ghjrcb as a search of its own. We read it on November 4, 2026, for searches worldwide in Russian, as the average month from October 2025 to September 2026. Ghjrcb drew about 110 searches a month, against 90,500 for прокси. About one search for прокси in 800 arrives typed on the wrong layout.
The six spellings in the chart add up to about 200 searches a month. Keyword Planner rounds small numbers to steps such as 10, 20 and 30, so the order of the last four can shift from month to month. Searches for ghjrcb itself ranged from 70 to 170 a month over that year.
Everyday words show the same slip at a much larger scale. These are the averages for the same months, also in Russian and worldwide:
| Typed | Meant | Searches a month |
|---|---|---|
| нщгегиу | YouTube | 246,000 |
| ghbdtn | привет (hello) | 14,800 |
| пщщпду | 12,100 | |
| zyltrc | Яндекс (Yandex) | 5,400 |
| gjujlf | погода (weather) | 5,400 |
| vfqyrhfan | Майнкрафт (Minecraft) | 480 |
| dbrbgtlbz | Википедия (Wikipedia) | 210 |
| ghjrcb | прокси (proxy) | 110 |
YouTube typed on Russian keys, нщгегиу, draws about 246,000 searches a month. Every row above comes from Keyword Planner, read on November 4, 2026.
Why Google still showed you proxy results
A search for ghjrcb from Germany on November 4, 2026, returned ordinary proxy results: a proxy program and a proxy shop. Google's search team wrote on March 29, 2021, that "every day, one out of 10 search queries is misspelled." The same post says its systems "find ways to understand what you mean," using a model with "more than 680 million parameters." When the system is very confident, the post adds, Google shows results for the corrected words at once.
Google's ad tools show how it groups plain typos. For English searches worldwide, Keyword Planner returns 68,000,000 a month for proxy, and the same 68,000,000 for prxy, porxy and peoxy. Google's ads help says that close variants of a keyword "may include misspellings, singular or plural forms."
A wrong layout changes every letter, and Keyword Planner keeps ghjrcb apart from прокси. For a longer phrase it joins the two. Прокси для телеграм (proxy for Telegram) and its wrong-layout spelling, ghjrcb lkz ntktuhfv, both show 60,500 searches a month.
Google's AI Overview for ghjrcb, read from Germany on the same day, called it the word proxy typed on a QWERTZ keyboard. The Cyrillic spelling it offered, гхјрсб, uses ј, a letter missing from the Russian layout. The answer never named прокси.
How to switch the keyboard layout back
Each system has a shortcut for this. The table lists the one each maker documents:
| Device | Shortcut | Documented by |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows key and Space | Microsoft |
| Mac | Control and Space | Apple |
| Android | Hold the space bar | Google (Gboard) |
| iPhone | Hold the globe key | Apple |
On Windows, hold the Windows key and press Space; each press moves to the next installed layout. Microsoft notes that if Space does nothing, only one layout is installed. On a Mac, Control and Space returns to the last input source you used. Control, Option and Space moves to the next one. On an iPhone, touch and hold the globe key, then tap the keyboard you want.
A program can also switch the layout for you. Yandex makes Punto Switcher for exactly this slip. Its help page says the program «видит недопустимое сочетание букв», sees an impossible combination of letters, and knows that ghbdtn is привет. The layout usually changes after a few letters, the page says, and sometimes after the whole word.
What a proxy is
The HTTP standard, RFC 9110, defines a proxy as "a message-forwarding agent that is chosen by the client." Your browser or app sends its requests to the proxy, and the proxy forwards them to the website. The site answers the proxy's IP address, and the proxy passes the answer back to you.
Proxies differ by where their address comes from: a data center, a home internet connection, an ISP range or a mobile carrier. Our guide to the types of proxies compares them. Our explainer on what a proxy is walks through the relay step by step, and the free proxy list lists public proxies that our own servers check.
Proxies from HProxy
HProxy sells proxies. Our own name, typed with the Russian layout on, comes out as рзкщчн. Residential proxies start at $0.44 per GB with country targeting, and at $1.00 per GB with state, city and ISP targeting. We also sell ISP, mobile and datacenter proxies, and we keep the free proxy list that our own servers check.
You can pay by card, with crypto such as BTC, ETH and USDT, or with Alipay, QRIS and Pix. Every payment lands on one balance for all products, and that balance never expires.
