Free proxies for Skyscanner meet a wall that free proxies for a lightly defended site never see. Skyscanner protects its public pages with bot management that judges the whole client, not just the address it arrives from, so a free proxy that connects is only halfway there. We pointed 60 free proxies at Skyscanner
On 24 August 2026 we pulled 60 HTTP proxies from our own free proxy list, each verified alive minutes earlier, and asked every one to fetch a Skyscanner flight search page. We sorted the responses by what came back.
One of the 60 loaded a normal page. Nine were stopped at a human-verification challenge, an interstitial that demands a person prove they are not automated before the page will load. The other fifty could not complete the request at all.

One in sixty is not a success rate you can build on. And the nine that reached a verification wall are the more instructive number: those proxies connected, reached Skyscanner, and were told to prove they were human before a single fare would render. That is bot management doing exactly what it is built to do.
Why free proxies fail on Skyscanner
Skyscanner scores the client, not just the IP. Its bot management fingerprints the TLS handshake, the headers and the browser environment, and challenges anything that looks automated. A free proxy changes the address but not the fingerprint of a plain fetch behind it, so the nine that connected still hit a verification wall. This is why "just rotate IPs" does not work here: the block is not only about the address.
They are shared datacenter addresses with low starting trust. The working free pool sits overwhelmingly on cloud networks, documented in our free proxy data study across 590K tracked proxies. Datacenter ranges start with low trust on a defended travel site, so a free proxy is fighting uphill before it sends a byte.
They die within minutes. Fifty of sixty freshly verified proxies could not complete the request. They passed a liveness check moments before and were gone by the time we used them. That is the ordinary cost of free, on top of the bot-management wall.

A few thousand shared, short-lived datacenter proxies are alive at any moment. Against Skyscanner's client-scoring bot management, that pool is the wrong shape twice: wrong reputation, wrong lifespan.
The easy alternative most people miss
Here is the part that makes free proxies beside the point for the most common Skyscanner task. If all you want is to see another market's prices, you do not need a proxy at all. Skyscanner's own country selector, at the bottom of the page, sets the market, locale and currency, and the site will show you that market's prices from your ordinary connection. For a manual look, the selector does what a free proxy is trying and failing to do, without the connection lottery or the verification wall.
A proxy only becomes necessary when you are collecting at volume, and at volume free proxies fail for the reasons the test shows. So free proxies occupy an awkward middle: unnecessary for the manual case, and inadequate for the collection case.

When the job outgrows free
You have crossed the line the moment you need search pages that load reliably, from a market you choose, at volume. That needs a residential address Skyscanner's bot management trusts and a real browser to satisfy the client-side checks, because the verification wall scores both.
