Marriott is the largest hotel company in the world, and in our travel-site test it was also the most hostile to a free proxy. We run a free proxy list and a verification engine, so we pointed 120 fresh free proxies at Marriott and counted, and Marriott challenged more of them than any other site in the test while letting exactly none through. We pointed 120 free proxies at Marriott
On 24 August 2026, as part of a wider travel-site test, we took 120 HTTP proxies from our own free proxy list, each verified alive minutes earlier, and asked every one for a Marriott hotel-search page.
None returned real content. Twenty-four were stopped by a bot challenge, the highest challenge count of any of the twelve travel sites we tested, and the other ninety-six could not complete the request at all.

Why Marriott turns free proxies away
Marriott's defense is a business strategy. It wants bookings on marriott.com, so it shows a member rate only to signed-in Bonvoy members, backs its direct price with a best-rate guarantee, and watches what touches the site, the mechanics we cover in proxies for Marriott. A site that instrumented is quick to challenge the shared datacenter addresses free proxies come from, which is why Marriott produced the highest challenge count in our test.
The other ninety-six proxies never even reached that challenge; they died first, which is the ordinary free-proxy story. So a free proxy meets Marriott two ways: most die before connecting, and the ones that connect are challenged on sight.
The member rate is out of reach anyway
Even setting the challenges aside, the most valuable Marriott data, the member rate, is unreachable for a free proxy. It needs a logged-in Bonvoy session held on one stable address, and a short-lived shared free proxy cannot hold a session. Reading member rates is a static-residential job, and reading the public rate a guest in a given market sees needs an in-market residential IP. A free datacenter proxy is neither.
The free pool behind the result
The connection failures are the pool, not bad luck. Our free proxy data study, from 129M checks across 590K tracked proxies, finds the working free pool overwhelmingly on cloud networks, a few thousand alive at any moment and turning over constantly, the wrong profile for a defended chain like Marriott.
