Tor

The volunteer-run anonymity network that routes traffic through three encrypted hops, built for privacy rather than for the work proxies are bought for.

Tor answers a threat model that proxies and VPNs do not attempt: what if no single party anywhere on the path should be able to connect who you are with where you are going. A proxy operator knows both. A VPN operator knows both. Tor is engineered so that nobody does, and everything distinctive about it, including everything inconvenient, follows from that one requirement.

The mechanism is onion routing, and the name is literal. Your client picks a circuit of three volunteer relays, a guard, a middle and an exit, and wraps your traffic in three layers of encryption. The guard peels one layer and learns only who you are and which middle comes next. The middle peels the second and learns only its neighbours. The exit peels the last and learns the destination but not you. Each hop holds one piece of a puzzle that only assembles if several of them collude.

The exit is where Tor meets the ordinary web, and it behaves like a proxy with two decisive differences. First, exits are shared by everyone and the full list of them is published openly, so a site wanting to treat Tor differently just downloads the list. Second, those few thousand addresses carry the aggregated behaviour of every user at once, so their reputation is permanently scorched. The result is familiar to anyone who has browsed through it: constant challenges, refused logins, and sites that decline Tor traffic entirely. Being blockable was traded away for being anonymous, deliberately.

It is also slow, and honestly so. Three hops through volunteer machines on donated bandwidth, often on different continents, stack their latencies on every round trip. Tor Browser makes a further trade in the same spirit: rather than helping each user look plausible, it standardises the fingerprint so every user looks alike, uniformity as camouflage where an antidetect browser pursues individual coherence. Two opposite strategies for the same surveillance problem.

So the honest placement is by threat model rather than by feature list. Journalists, sources, and people in censored or monitored environments need what Tor's architecture provides and should not substitute a commercial product for it. Scraping, geo-testing, and account work through Tor inherit catalogued exits, ruined address reputation and painful latency while gaining an anonymity property those tasks never needed. The two worlds want different tools, and each is poor at the other's job.

Is Tor a proxy?

It uses proxy-like relays, and locally your applications reach it through a SOCKS interface, but the design goal is different in kind. A proxy substitutes your address while its operator sees your traffic and its origin. Tor's three-hop circuits exist so no single relay learns both ends of a connection, an anonymity property no one-hop service can offer, purchased with speed and with blockability.

Why is Tor so slow?

Every request crosses three volunteer relays, frequently on different continents, and each hop adds its round-trip time and shares its donated bandwidth with everyone else using it. Multi-second page loads are normal. It is the structural price of the routing, not a misconfiguration, and no setting meaningfully removes it.

Why do so many websites block Tor?

Because the complete list of exit addresses is public, and because those few thousand exits carry the pooled behaviour of every Tor user, including the abusive ones. A site can match the list in one lookup and act on it, and the addresses' reputation is permanently poor. Anonymity for the user and distinguishability of the network were traded off, in the network's favour.

Can I scrape through Tor since it is free?

Poorly. The exits are few, shared, catalogued and heavily challenged, the latency is high, and volume from a handful of scorched addresses is the profile every defence already expects. The economics are also unkind: the network runs on donated capacity intended for people who need anonymity. For collection work, addresses that are plentiful, clean and yours to manage do the job Tor structurally cannot.
