proxy.tokyo is gone in the most literal sense: the name itself no longer exists in the domain system. The last page anyone saved from it dates to December 2020.
What it was
The Internet Archive's first working copy of proxy.tokyo is from May 2017 and it holds 42 days of captures in total.
The page called itself "Proxy Tokyo - Japan Proxy". Underneath it was PHProxy, the same free script the rest of the directory ran.
You can change your public IP address through the secure Japan web proxy server behind the firewall without changing computer properties or installing additional applications on your computer.
That is the site's own description, from the capture of 30 May 2017.
It was listed on workingproxysites.com, a directory of free web proxies, 10 years ago, and that listing counted 317 clicks through to it. The directory recorded it as United States.
When it stopped
The last capture that shows the proxy itself is from 3 December 2020 and the archive kept visiting until 16 September 2024.
What the name does today
We checked proxy.tokyo on 10 September 2026 from our own server. The name does not resolve: there is no address behind it, so nothing can be served from it.
The registry has no record of the name any more, which means the registration itself lapsed rather than the site simply going quiet.
People still look for it: 50 searches a month for the name, according to Google's Keyword Planner read on 10 September 2026.
What to use instead
Use a list somebody keeps checking rather than a name that used to work. Our free proxy list is re-verified every few minutes, and an address that stops answering leaves it instead of sitting there for years. If you already have an address, the proxy checker will tell you whether it still relays anything.
The limits of free are the same everywhere, ours included: the addresses are shared, so the sites that care have seen them before, and there is no session to hold, so logins break part way through.
What this page cannot tell you
The record shows when, not why. Nothing public says whether the operator lost interest, lost the hosting, or simply moved on, so this page does not guess.
Our status check is one day from one vantage point, and a site that refuses requests from data centres would look the same as one that is switched off. We will check this page again by 1 January 2027.
