free-proxy.xyz does not answer. The name still resolves, but nothing responded to our request, and the archive's last working copy is from September 2020.
What it was
The Internet Archive's first working copy of free-proxy.xyz is from June 2015 and it holds 110 days of captures in total.
The page called itself "Free Proxy - France Proxy Server". The directory recorded it as a PHProxy install, which is what nearly all of these sites were.
It was listed on workingproxysites.com, a directory of free web proxies, 12 years ago, and that listing counted 284 clicks through to it. The directory recorded it as United States.
When it stopped
The last capture that shows the proxy itself is from 24 September 2020 and the archive kept visiting until 8 September 2025.
What the name does today
We checked free-proxy.xyz on 10 September 2026 from our own server in Germany. It answers, and the page is titled "Loading...".
The registry record shows the name was registered again on 13 August 2024 and is paid until 13 August 2027 through CommuniGal Communication Ltd. Its name servers are ns1.badgerdns.com and ns2.badgerdns.com. Whoever holds it now took it after the proxy had already stopped.
People still look for it: 70 searches a month for the name, according to Google's Keyword Planner read on 10 September 2026.
Where to go from here
A list with a visible last-checked time beats a remembered domain. Ours re-verifies every few minutes; the checker tests a single address if you would rather bring your own.
Expect what free has always meant: shared addresses that targets recognise, and no session persistence, which breaks anything behind a login.
What this page cannot tell you
The record shows when, not why. Nothing public says whether the operator lost interest, lost the hosting, or simply moved on, so this page does not guess.
Our status check is one day from one vantage point, and a site that refuses requests from data centres would look the same as one that is switched off. We will check this page again by 1 January 2027.
