proxy-server.xyz still loads, and that is the confusing part. What answers today is a holding page, not the proxy. The last working version the archive kept is from August 2015.

The Internet Archive's first working copy of proxy-server.xyz is from August 2015 and it holds 14 days of captures in total.
The page called itself "Proxy Server - France Web Proxy". It ran on PHProxy, the script behind most free web proxies of that era.
It was listed on workingproxysites.com, a directory of free web proxies, 11 years ago, and that listing counted 319 clicks through to it. The directory recorded it as United States.
When it stopped
The last capture that shows the proxy itself is from 20 August 2015 and the archive kept visiting until 18 July 2025.
What the name does today
We checked proxy-server.xyz on 10 September 2026 from our own server in Germany. It answers with parked.
People still look for it: 10 searches a month for the name, according to Google's Keyword Planner read on 10 September 2026.
What still works
The replacement for a dead web proxy is not another name to remember. Our free proxy list shows when each entry was last checked and re-verifies every few minutes, and the checker tests an address you bring yourself.
Free proxies stay shared and short lived. For opening a blocked page that is usually enough, and for anything that has to work at a particular moment it is not.
What this page cannot tell you
Why it stopped is not in the record. A dead name and an archive that runs out show that something ended, not the reason for it, and we will not put a reason in print that the record does not carry.
Our status check is one day from one vantage point, and a site that refuses requests from data centres would look the same as one that is switched off. We will check this page again by 1 January 2027.
